reason and freedom
Some people consider democracy as an ultimate decision making system for government. However it allows unreasonable policy to be put into place by a powerful majority. Democracy maybe the best tool we have now, however there must be a better way.
Public attacks on reason are tantamount to racial and religious attacks. When large groups of people who have strong beliefs that are not backed by reason make public policy in government or in society it infringes on other peoples freedoms. Reason should be the only tool that governments should use to make decisions and policy.
What are some of the characteristics of decisions made with reason? Reasonable decisions are not regional. Two reasonable people who have never talked to each other might come to the same conclusion. Reasonable decisions are made through observations of the natural world. Reason yields tools can be used to predict outcomes. A decision made any other way must have been corrupted by money, power or a specific dogmatic belief (knowningly or unknowningly) .
In order for people to feel the freedom to make unreasonable decisions in their own lives, our government needs to make decisions in reasonable ways. Freedom of religion and a reasonable government are truly inseparable as is an unreasonable government and a corrupt government.
Mandates/disclaimers on creation theories in schools are a clear example of unreasonable government decisions. Here are some stickers for your textbooks
